So my intention was to right a little blog every few days while out there, unfortunately I didn’t do that many and then updated the app on my phone and it lost all my local posts and I hadn’t uploaded them. D’oh!

So anyway, I’ll just sum up. I went to New Zealand, it was pretty cool, there are some pictures here.

That is a little understatement, I loved the place everywhere we went the country was beautiful, the people so kind, the things you could do, and we did were great! I got to swim with wild dolphins and look them right in the eye and have them try and get us to play with them, its really amazing having this animal look at you and swimming around you in circles then nodding its head down to try and get you to dive down with them for fun (I tried but the wet suit was super buoyant and I hate sea water and got loads in my mouth). I did a 19.4KM hike into the mountains (Mount Doom) and really enjoyed it, made me want to do some back country hiking and skiing some time on my next ski trip.

We spent a few days in a couple of different wine regions as well, that was really good. Tried some lovely wines….well they were lovely on the day, some didn’t seem so lovely when we tried them back at the hotel and no one seems to remember who really bought those particular ones…

So this weekend just been I wanted to try out my new walking boots I bought for going to New Zealand as I thought I don’t want to spoil my 3 weeks there where we will be doing allot of walking, glaciers and general outside stuff by having bad foot wear and getting blisters. So with that in mind I thought it best to try out my new boots and wear them in a bit and also get used to doing some longer walks as the most I walk in a normal day is from my bike to the office and from my desk to the coffee machine! So with a couple of mates we went to an area called Schoorl on the west cost of Nord-Holland where they have some lovely country side, the dunes there get pretty high so I walked up the first ever proper hill I have seen here! (pics to prove it)

After about 5km my feet were pretty sore and I had a blister already. We stopped for some food and then when we started I realised I really felt I couldn’t complete the next 10km so our ‘guide’ Guido decided he knew a shorter way back, it would still be 5km as we had sort of come straight out to the coast, but we started on a paved bike path back, which was much better than the sand had been. Although after a little while it became clear that we weren’t entirely sure where we were meant to be going, even though Guido kept on saying he knew where we were! I forgot to start the GPS tracker at the very start of the walk, but from the map below you can see that we really did go a pretty stupid route back and in the end did walk almost exactly 15km anyway! the last bit on roads and in the pouring rain. Although my heels are still really painful it was a good day and we had a laugh (mostly).

Above is the route we took minus the first couple of kilometres.

So it seems for work I end up in Germany allot. Most recently I have been to Berlin for a media event and Düsseldorf for some testing with an external partner.

The Berlin trip was first and it started with my team lead asking if anyone in our team had a driving licence, well I did and said I quite enjoy driving and have recently been driving as well so not a problem for me. The next week this found me having to pick up a few things from the office and a colleague, catch the train to Eindhoven and pick up a car from our office there. Then we started the 6.5hr drive to Berlin! Only it wasn’t so short, unfortunately. A part of a 3 lane autobahn was shut and the only way to avoid the closed road was everyone getting off and going through 1 small town. It was a nightmare, even with a TomTom trying to help us out there was just no way to avoid that many people with out going so far round that it took longer than just sitting there in SO much traffic. So anyway about 8-8.5hrs later we arrived at our hotel. The next day was spent in the Berlin office apart from taking the car out to clean it ourselves as no one had though a head that that needed to be arranged. Then in the evening there was a dinner on a boat that took us all around Berlin’s canal system (that I had no idea existed)  which was pretty good fun, and there was free wine which made it even better! Then in the morning, quick visit to the office to pick a few things up then the long drive back (at least no major roads were closed in that direction. It was a long 3 days, but was ok, although I will not be doing such along car journey as the only driver in one day for a long while if every!

The next trip was much less eventful, Düsseldorf, just a 2 and a bit hours train trip, then into the test centre of the company I was visiting, only to find they had not actually set up the testing yet. So we waited for them to set up, then of course the first test failed (as you would expect setting something up for the first time) so we called it lunch! Then back in the afternoon to find yet more problems, as it wasn’t going so well we headed off to the hotel, then a nice walk along the river front and some dinner and a few beers in the bar that some locals had taken me to on my last trip. They have their own regional beer, Altbier, which was pretty good, although you couldn’t drink too much of it, probably for the best anyway. The next day was much more productive with some tests actually working! Hurrah! So we bashed through what needed to be done, finishing early. Another wander around the town and getting rained on allot ended the trip, then the lovely train again (I may have had a little snooze) arriving back in Amsterdam for about 21:00,  meeting up with some French friends for some beers in an Irish bar until the wee hours of the morning, not a bad end to the week I think.

So last weekend I had another whistle stop trip to the UK, this time to go to a wedding of a friend from Uni, Jess. The timings for the whole thing were tight, landing in Gatwick around 10:00, meeting another friend from Uni, Amy and her boyfriend Paul, grabbing a car, then making a 3hr drive to Wyke Regis for the wedding at 15:00. Yes I know, lots of room for error!
Well it all went pretty well and we made it to Wyke Regis with enough time to transform ourselves from weary travellers into beautiful/dashing wedding goers. Well I put a suit on, that counts yeah?
The wedding was lovely, Jess looked amazing (of course) and although I only briefly meet Andy, he, and his whole family seemed like a great bunch. As they are both in aid work there were some amazing stories from inspiring people, including some old Uni friends who I haven’t seen since the last time Jess organised a knees up (probably get in trouble for calling her wedding a knees up;) I may have then gone out afterwards and drunk a little much, ending up with walking an hour home in the rain arriving at 4 in the morning. Next day was up and to Dorchester for breakfast with a couple of friends that I know from my Costa days, then back for lunch in Wyke Regis at the Gill’s with some of the wedding folk, then another 3hr drive back up to Gatwick, stopping once as I thought I was going to be sick then again to meet my parents so I could pick up a few things I had had delivered to their house. Made it to the airport in plenty of time (sorry Amy and Paul) where I ate my own weight in ribs and chicken after my appetite returned.

Was a great weekend, just a shame it couldn’t have been longer. And Jon I blame you entirely (well mostly) for how ruff I felt on Sunday. Made me think meeting with some friends should really happen more often than once every 4-5 years! A few picks can be found here
